POLICY AND PROCEDURE MANUAL

ARTICLE NUMBER:  LPG02-01

EFFECTIVE DATE:  March 1, 2002

SUBJECT:  Underground LP tanks in traffic areas

OBJECTIVE: To provide clarification of the protection requirements of NFPA 58 for underground LP tanks in traffic areas

BACKGROUND:

Underground LP gas installations in traffic areas have specific requirements for protection of the tank. The method of providing that protection has been questionable. This Policy and procedure should provide guidance in proper installations.

POLICY/PROCEDURE:

1.      LP gas tanks and traffic boxes shall not be placed in parking areas. They may be placed only in traffic movement areas if the installation is in a parking lot.

2.      Traffic boxes shall be designed and installed so as to protect the tank and piping without placing any force against the tank.
