Collier County Fire Prevention and Protection Code

POLICY AND PROCEDURE MANUAL

ARTICLE NUMBER:  FSK03-01

EFFECTIVE DATE:  January 28, 2003

SUBJECT:  Sprinkler Protection for Existing Enclosed Lanai’s

OBJECTIVETo set a uniform policy for Collier County regarding the requirements for existing enclosed lanai’s in sprinklered buildings.

BACKGROUND:

Collier County, in the past, permitted the enclosing of Lanai’s in sprinklered buildings without requiring sprinklering of the Lanai under certain conditions. However, as of January 1, 2002, the Florida Uniform Fire Prevention Code went into effect, voiding all local amendments.  The Fire Marshals of Collier County have reviewed this issue and have made the following decision.

POLICY/PROCEDURE:

Fire Sprinkler protection will not be required for enclosed Lanai’s in completely sprinklered buildings under the following conditions:

  1. Lanai enclosures permitted prior to 1/1/2002, where the doors between the living area and the Lanai remain intact and functional.
  2. Lanai enclosures completed prior to 1/1/2002, where the doors between the living area and the Lanai remain intact and functional.

Upon the request of the applicable Fire District, documentation of compliance with the prescribed time frames shall be provided by the owner of the unit.
