Collier County Fire Prevention and Protection Code POLICY AND PROCEDURE MANUAL |
ARTICLE NUMBER: FSK02-09
EFFECTIVE DATE: July 12, 2002
SUBJECT: Implementation of requirements for .05 density in residential sprinkler systems
OBJECTIVE: To provide a clear line of demarcation between the acceptance of .04 density and .05 density
BACKGROUND:
Underwriter’s Laboratories revised their test standards for residential sprinklers and will no longer list residential heads of less than .05 density as of July 12, 2002 with one exception, those to be used for the Voluntary Replacement Program for potentially defective sprinkler heads from Central, Star and Gem; these heads must be specifically labeled for VRP use only. Many older style heads remain available as manufacturers reportedly stockpiled the lower density heads. It was suggested these heads should be utilized for existing systems as replacements for used or damaged heads. This would prevent the recalculation of systems and possible overhaul of the piping when lower density heads used or damaged in buildings need to be replaced, at least for a period of time. However, some contractors wish to continue to use the older heads in new applications until their own stock or the overall stock is depleted. Most local contractors were notified before the effective date of the revision that Collier County would not accept anything less than the .05 density after July 12, 2002 to provide a line of demarcation between the .05 density and those systems of less than .05 density. At least one manufacturer (Tyco – Central) also advised contractors to check with the AHJ for interpretation and application. However it was felt the policy should be placed in writing from the Fire Marshals.
POLICY/PROCEDURE:
All applications for residential sprinkler systems under NFPA 13D and NFPA 13R shall meet the new .05 density requirements as of July 12, 2002.
