POLICY AND PROCEDURE MANUAL

ARTICLE NUMBER:  FAL03-01

EFFECTIVE DATE:  June 1, 2003

SUBJECT:  Installation of duct-type smoke detectors listed for use in air distribution systems that are connected to the fire alarm system

OBJECTIVE: To provide clarification regarding whom may install duct-type smoke detectors and assign responsibility for their installation and functionality.

BACKGROUND:

Often duct-type smoke detectors are installed by a mechanical contractor and connected to the fire alarm system by the alarm system contractor.  As such, a consistent policy/procedure is established and enforceable within the fire districts, whereby licensed mechanical contractors may be permitted to install duct-type smoke detectors.

POLICY/PROCEDURE:

It has been determined by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) that duct-type smoke detectors listed for use in air distribution systems (which are connected to the building fire alarm system) may be installed by licensed mechanical contractors in lieu of licensed fire alarm contractors or certified electrical contractors.  And as such, when the mechanical contractor is used to install such duct-type smoke detectors, the final responsibility for ensuring the sampling tubes and the smoke detector have been installed correctly rests with the alarm system contractor.  This final responsibility includes the understanding that air duct detectors shall be tested and inspected to ensure that the device will sample the airstream, and that the test shall be made in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
